How abstract is phonetics?
نویسنده
چکیده
Assuming a generative principle of description for speech utterances, in particular a syllable-based phonological representation and the C/D model of phonetic implementation of uterrances, the basic question is discussed: how abstract phonetic representations as an optimal symbolic description of speech utterances should be. Several examples from a variety of languages in the world, including Kaingang (a Je language spoken by some indiginous Brazilians), which requires a phonological specification of oral syllables, as opposed to the default nasal syllables, are discussed. The advantage of using syllabic features and their implementations for concise phonetic description for particular languages is advocated.

5. Some caveats -The phonetics/phonology interface is a broad topic that has been considered from many points of views. -Extensive recent literature in acquisition, psycholinguistics, role of the lexicon, role of speech perception (See among others, recent LabPhon volumes, Burton-Roberts et al. 2000, Hume and Johnson 2001, Bod et al. 2003) -Conclusion recently argued for by Pierrehumbert (2003,...
متن کاملProsodic Boundary Strengthening in the Phonetics-Prosody Interface
Prosodic structure has been assumed to serve as a frame for articulation, so that phonetic shaping of abstract phonological representations is fine-tuned as a function of the prosodic system of the language. The intricate relationship between phonetics and prosodic structure has been explored in the literature under the rubric of the phonetics-prosody interface. This paper reviews various aspec...

Mapping from acoustic signals to lexical representations is a complex process mediated by a number of different levels of representation. This paper reviews properties of the phonetic and phonological levels, and hypotheses about how category structure is represented at each of these levels, and evaluates these hypotheses in light of relevant electrophysiological studies of phonetics and phonol...
متن کاملOn the Relationship between Phonology and Phonetics (or Why Phonetics Is Not Phonology)
In this presentation, I argue that unifying phonetics and phonology in the grammar has undesirable consequences. Evidence for this position is provided from various sources, but focuses on intonation, an area of linguistic structure that has often been viewed as not requiring an abstract phonological representation.
متن کاملAt the Juncture of Prosody, Phonology, and Phonetics— the Interaction of Phrasal and Syllable Structure in Shaping the Timing of Consonant Gestures
The Laboratory Phonology research paradigm has established that abstract phonological structure has direct reflections in the spatiotemporal details of speech production. Past exploration of the complex relationship between linguistic structural properties and articulation has resulted in a softening of a severance between phonetics and phonology, which in recent years has begun to likewise enc...
